In order for residents to be notified of a Town Meeting or State or Local Election, Public Notices regarding the date, time and location are posted at least seven (7) days before each Town Meeting or Election. Notices are posted at the following locations:
- Public Notices and/or Calendar Section of this Website
- Fairfield Town Office
- Fairfield, Hinckley & Shawmut Post Offices
- Fairfield Police Station
- Lawrence Public Library
Residents may also view upcoming elections scheduled on the community Calendar of Events.
Elections and polling place administration are facilitated in accordance with: M.R.S.A. Title 21-A, 30-A, the Town Charter, and ADA compliance.
Annual Town Budget Meeting
The Annual Town Budget Meeting is held on the second Monday in May of each year at 7:00 p.m. and is typically held at the Community Center, 61 Water Street, Fairfield.
Municipal Elections
The annual Municipal Election to elect Town Councilors, and Water District Trustees is held in conjunction with the State Election on the first Tuesday following the 1st Monday in November. The annual Municipal Election to elect School Board Members is held on the 2nd Tuesday of June if no other election is scheduled in June. The polls are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Community Center located at 61 Water Street in Fairfield.
School District Budget - MSAD #49
According to the new school district consolidation laws, the school board must hold a District Budget Meeting (open town meeting style) so voters may vote on itemized budget amounts for the upcoming fiscal year. The District Budget Meeting is held in the month of May at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Junior High School gymnasium. Once the budget amounts are adopted at the District Budget Meeting, the school board must hold a District Budget Validation Referendum Election, in which voters will vote either yes or no on the total budget amount for the upcoming fiscal year. The Validation Election is held within 30 days of the District Budget Meeting. Polls are only open from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Community Center on 61 Water Street. Check the Public Notices section of this website in May for actual date/time/location.
State Elections
The State typically holds Elections on the second Tuesday in June and first Tuesday following the first Monday in November of each year. The Primary Election is held on the second Tuesday of June of each even numbered year, while the General Election is held on the first Tuesday in November also in each even numbered year. Presidential Primary elections are held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday of March in Presidential Election years. State Referendums may be held at either the June or November Election Days (or in March of Presidential Election years). The polls are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Community Center located at 61 Water Street.

Election Equipment
The Town utilizes equipment as required in contract with and via the State's contract with Election Systems & Software. Frequently folks inquire regarding the possibility of hacking. Tabulators are subject to specific security measures that includes: multiple layers of locking mechanisms, tamper-evident seals, passwords, restricted chain of custody & access to all components and ballots, tabulators are NOT connected to the internet, are tested independently prior to every election; with software coding facilitated via computers that are not connected to the internet.
